Alice believes she should get the guy and be able to succeed, because, well… she’s a good person, and that’s what happens to good people, right?

However, she’s not going to get anywhere if she allows herself to be tricked by a dude like Brett. I somehow doubt he was pulling any mean feats of social engineering. Alice is just kind of dumb, kind of desperate for acceptance, and an attractive girl. Brett’s an opportunistic scumbag. This sort of outcome was inevitable.
