When I was writing the scripts for Oathkeeper, I had to figure out how Alice’s faith in God had begun. She popped into the RPG we played fully formed and ready to go, and her origin was a couple of sentences.

A friend once asked me if Alice was a ‘fuck you’ to the religious or to the church, and I can see where people get that because she’s not very bright and she’s not very mature. But her faith is genuine, even though it’s immature and untested. Her faith is the foundation and the cornerstone for most of her beliefs and actions.

This is not a story about blind zealotry. Alice’s parents never brought her into the church (her mother never went and her father abandoned it after Claire’s death), she picked it up on her own in response to her questions about mortality and the afterlife. This is (partly) a coming-of-age story about faith, belief and testing your own beliefs against the adult world. Whether Alice’s faith survives her upcoming trials is another matter.
